
All this talk aboutsmart field... I often see how the news writes about some fantastic yield figures, about revolutionary technologies. And everything seems to be beautiful and promising. But in reality, as always, everything is more complicated. The main question is who is ready to buy these technologies, who is ready to invest in them? And here, in my opinion, the fun begins. These are not always Western countries, as is commonly believed. Often, and vice versa, it is there that we find the most active audience for our developments. Let us share our experience as we see it from the inside.
It is often thought that all innovations immediately fly to Europe or America. This is a misconception. In fact, the fastest and most interesting projects find their application in countries with developing agriculture, but with a high level of technological implementation. Of course, there is not always a huge budget ready, as in developed countries, but there is a willingness to experiment, an understanding of the need to increase efficiency and, most importantly, a clearly defined problem that technology can solve.
For example, my colleagues and I are now actively working in the Republic of Kazakhstan. There is very great potential in the grain sector, but, as in many countries in the region, there are problems with optimizing irrigation, uneven distribution of fertilizers, and monitoring soil conditions. And our solutions, integrated irrigation and fertilization systems based on data from sensors, show an economic effect in a very short time. Yes, the infrastructure there is different, the security requirements and standards are different. But this can be solved. The main thing is to adapt technologies to local conditions.
Particular attention should be paid to markets where water shortages are becoming increasingly acute. Poland, Lithuania, Latvia - there is a growing demand for systems that allow the most efficient use of water for irrigation. But this is not just automatic control - it is an integrated approach, including collecting data from sensors, analyzing weather conditions, and predicting moisture consumption by plants. Our experience in Lithuania has shown that even small improvements in water efficiency can significantly increase yields and reduce costs.
In many cases, simply implementing technology is not enough. It is important that it integrates easily with existing farm management systems. This could be a resource accounting system, a logistics management system, or a product quality control system. Of course, it's not that simple. One of the biggest challenges is the lack of qualified specialists. Data is, of course, very important. But by themselves they mean nothing. You need to be able to analyze them, extract useful information, and make decisions based on it. This requires special algorithms and software. We are also actively working in this direction, developing our own tools for data analysis.
We had an interesting case in Georgia. We offered them a comprehensive automatic watering and fertilizing system. Theoretically, this should have significantly increased grape yields. But in reality, due to the characteristics of the soil and climate, the system did not work as efficiently as expected. We had to carry out additional calibration, configure algorithms, and make adjustments to the watering mode. As a result, after a year we achieved good results, but it was a valuable experience. It is important not to stop there, constantly improve the system, adapt it to local conditions.
In another case, in Romania, we implemented a soil monitoring project using drones. This allowed farmers to quickly identify problem areas and make timely adjustments to the fertilizer regime. The result is a 15% reduction in fertilizer costs and a 10% increase in yield.
